قالت شركة "غوغل" ان مستخدمي خدمتها البريدية "جي ميل" سيستطيعون الان الاتصال بالهواتف مباشرة عبر بريدهم الالكتروني مما يضع الشركة في منافسة مباشرة مع خدمة الاتصال عبر الانترنت "اسكايب" وشركات الاتصال التقليدي مثل ايه.تي. اند تي. وفيريزون كوميونيكيشنز.
وسبق أن وفرت "غوغل" بالفعل خدمات الاتصال الصوتي من جهاز كمبيوتر الى جهاز اخر والدردشة عبر الفيديو ولكنها قالت انه من يوم الاربعاء ولأول مرة ستسمح بالاتصال بالهواتف المنزلية والهواتف النقالة مباشرة من "جي ميل" .
ووعدت "غوغل" بأن المكالمات من "جي ميل" الى الهواتف في الولايات المتحدة وكندا ستكون مجانية حتى نهاية هذا العام وقالت انها ستضع تعريفة مخفضة للمكالمات التي تجرى الى دول اخرى.
وقالت على سبيل المثال ان المكالمات الى بريطانيا وفرنسا والمانيا والصين واليابان ستكون تكلفتها سنتين فقط للدقيقة.
ويقول المحللون ان الخدمة الجديدة من المحتمل أن تمثل خطرا تنافسيا كبيرا على خدمات مثل التي تقدمها "اسكايب" أكثر مما تمثله لشركات الاتصالات التقليدية والتي اخذت بالفعل في تخفيض اسعار مكالماتها في السنوات الاخيرة بسبب المنافسة الشرسة.

وقال ريزيمير انه مثل اسكايب فمن المتوقع ان تصبح خدمة "غوغل" اكثر شعبية بين المستخدمين الامريكيين الذين يجرون اتصالات دولية مقارنة مع الاشخاص الذين يتصلون بالاصدقاء داخل البلاد.
وقال "الاتصالات رخيصة بالفعل لذلك لا اعتقد انها ستجتذب كما كبيرا من الاتصالات الداخلية. يمكن ان تأخذ بعضا من سوق "الاتصالات" الدولية".
